This week has been a really exciting week for reading at Charter.

On Monday the children all came into school and spotted a big difference in the reading shelves.

Unfortunately, over time our books had gradually been damaged and lost so the shelves were looking quite bare. Recently, a lot of time and effort has gone into getting lots of wonderful new books ordered and covered for our children; however it has been completely worth it. Our reading shelves are now all full and looking wonderful with a fantastic range of exciting new books for our children to read and enjoy.

We had a special reading assembly on Monday morning and there were some amazing ‘Wow’ moments as the books were shared and the children realised just how many there now are.

Before and after photos of the pink and purple shelves.

After assembly, some classes couldn’t wait; they were there straight away choosing new books. Throughout Monday, every child in the school looked through their colour shelf, explored the new books and chose a brand new reading book to take home. We took some lovely photographs, as you can see the children were engrossed.

Throughout the day we asked the children what they thought of the new books and it was delightful to hear their responses.

The children were completely hooked; they didn’t want to put the new books down.

Here are a few of the children’s quotes:

Matthew (5/6 T) “The new ‘Chucklers’ books are hilarious: I hope people look after them as I want to try and read them all.”

Allyanne (5/6 T) “The Lost series are great. This book could keep me busy for ages: it’s full of suspense, covers serious topics and I even get to make decisions which guide me through the book-others could make different choices and read different parts of the books instead.”

Ben (5/6 T) “My new book is brilliant!”

Harvey (5J) “These new books are really cool.”

Tegan (5J) “I like my new book because it is mysterious and I can’t wait to see what happens next.”

Hermione (3/4 R) “They all look exciting and I’m looking forward to reading them.”

Lacey (3/4 R) “I don’t know which book to choose first, there are so many that I want to read.”

Larissa (3/4 B) “Thank you for the new books.”

Lily (3/4 B) “Beautiful new books.”

Chloe (2B) “It was brilliant to see the new books, I love books.”

Jamie (2B) “They look new and shiny.”

Jacob (1/2 W) “I was so excited to choose my new book.”

Hannah (1/2 W) “My new book looks like it’ll be fun to read.”

Nicholas (1B) “There are books that I like now, I’ve got one on football.”

Sophia (1B) “I can’t wait to get home and read my new book.”

Tiannah-Mai (Reception) “If you break them we will have to buy more. We need to look after them.”

George (Reception) “There are loads and they are all brand new.”

Reading at home is really important, unfortunately a lot of our children had admitted to not really doing this. However, since the new reading books the teachers have all commented about how many more children have read at home each night. This is wonderful to hear and we all hope that this continues.

I shared some lovely reading quotes with the children.

"There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate's loot on Treasure Island." — Walt Disney.

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go."   — Dr. Seuss.
