End of Year Young Carers Newsletter

Young Carers in Schools

Welcome to our first edition of the Young Carers in Schools (YCiS) newsletter. We've had an exciting start to the academic year and it is only right we share the fantastic YCiS work happening across our City.

Our Young Carers Education worker has been working hard to visit Primary Schools across Coventry since September. We are extremely pleased to say, 7 schools will have undertaken a Young Carers awareness assembly at their school by the end of 2016. So a big thank you to those schools that have welcomed us and given us the platform to raise awareness of Young Carers, and who are working closely with the young carers team in supporting and identifying young carers in their schools.

We are also extremely pleased to announce we have 4 schools across the City that are undertaking the Young Carers Award Scheme that is run jointly by the Carers Trust National and The Children's Society. These schools will be working towards obtaining a Bronze Award level and we hope to achieve Gold level in the near future with them and many more schools across Coventry... Helping our local schools to become nationally recognised as being champions for Young Carers - putting our City on the map.

The schools we are celebrating that are currently working towards achieving a Bronze Award are Coundon Primary, Saint John Vianney Primary, Stoke Primary and Courthouse Green Primary School.

Parkgate Primary have previously received a local Young Carers Gold Award, but we are hopeful they will be able achieve the Gold Award Nationally in the future- watch this space!

The Carers Trust HofE, Young Carers Project fully supports these schools in achieving their desired level of award and can also support your school in the future should you wish to apply!

We would also like to bring this free event held by Carers Trust and The Children’s Society to your attention

It will help you to meet the duties contained in the Care Act 2014 and Children and Families Act 2014 and will give you some information on how you can achieve this in Coventry for Young Carers. For more details and to register please click this link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/meeting-your-identification-duties-under-the-children-and-families-act-2014-free-training-for-local-tickets-29484254198
Spaces are limited as the event is free, it is being held in London on Tuesday 17th January. We’d be delighted if you would attend and perhaps we could schedule a catch up afterwards.

To further promote Young Carers in Schools, I am hoping to organise a monthly session for key staff members to come along, discuss and share tips and ideas about the awards scheme plus much more... Whether you are working towards an award or wish to know more about it, it will be open to all. More information will be circulated regarding this mid-Jan 2017. If you have a preference for day/time easiest for you to come out of school please let me know so I can plan accordingly.
